Overview
“The work of art is a scream of freedom.” — Christo
Christo (1935–2020) was a Bulgarian-born artist renowned for his monumental environmental installations created in collaboration with Jeanne-Claude. Born Christo Vladimirov Javacheff in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, he later moved to Paris and eventually settled in the United States, where the duo developed some of the most iconic large-scale public artworks of the 20th century.

Together, Christo and Jeanne-Claude transformed landscapes, buildings, and public spaces through temporary interventions involving fabric, rope, and engineered structures. Their celebrated projects — including Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin, The Gates in New York’s Central Park, and Surrounded Islands in Miami — redefined the relationship between sculpture, architecture, and the environment. By altering familiar spaces on a monumental scale, their work invited viewers to experience the world with renewed perception and wonder.

Entirely self-funded through the sale of preparatory works and drawings, Christo’s projects often required years of planning, negotiation, and collaboration. His visionary practice profoundly influenced installation and environmental art, emphasizing freedom, ephemerality, and collective experience.
