Overview
“Color is a force.” — Imi Knoebel
Imi Knoebel (born 1940) is a German artist recognized as one of the leading figures of postwar abstract art. Born in Dessau, Germany, Knoebel studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Joseph Beuys, where he developed a rigorous artistic language centered on geometry, color, material, and spatial structure.

Knoebel is best known for his minimalist yet expressive compositions composed of painted aluminum, wood panels, and geometric forms. His work explores the relationship between abstraction and perception through bold color contrasts, fragmented structures, and carefully balanced arrangements. Moving fluidly between painting and sculpture, he challenged traditional distinctions between the two disciplines while remaining deeply engaged with the legacy of modernist abstraction.

Throughout his career, Knoebel exhibited internationally and became one of the most influential contemporary German artists. His works are held in major museum collections worldwide and continue to shape contemporary abstract practice through their formal precision and vibrant material presence.
