Overview
“A painting must remain open.” — Raoul De Keyser
Raoul De Keyser (1930–2012) was a Belgian painter celebrated for his subtle and deeply personal approach to abstraction. Born in Deinze, Belgium, De Keyser developed a quiet yet influential body of work that bridged everyday observation with minimalist and abstract painting.
Often inspired by ordinary surroundings — such as gardens, sports fields, architectural details, and fragments of daily life — De Keyser transformed simple visual impressions into restrained, poetic compositions. His paintings are characterized by delicate brushwork, muted colors, and an understated balance between figuration and abstraction. Rather than pursuing grand gestures, he embraced ambiguity, intimacy, and the power of suggestion.
Over the course of his career, De Keyser gained international recognition as one of the most important Belgian painters of the postwar period. His works are held in major museum collections worldwide and continue to influence contemporary painting through their quiet intensity and refined sensitivity.
