Alighiero Boetti
“Bringing the world into the world.” — Alighiero Boetti
Alighiero Boetti (1940–1994) was an Italian conceptual artist associated with the Arte Povera movement, though his work consistently transcended traditional artistic categories. Born in Turin, Italy, Boetti developed a multidisciplinary practice exploring systems, language, time, geography, and the balance between order and chaos.
He became widely known for his embroidered textile works, particularly the celebrated Mappe series, produced in collaboration with Afghan artisans. His art frequently incorporated numbers, letters, grids, postal systems, and collaborative methods, reflecting his fascination with classification and the complexity of the world. By embracing chance, delegation, and duality, Boetti challenged conventional ideas of authorship and artistic control.
Throughout his career, Boetti exhibited internationally and became one of the leading figures of postwar Italian art. His works are held in major museum collections worldwide and continue to influence contemporary conceptual practices.
