Overview
“Art is about life, and it can’t really be about anything else.” — Tracey Emin
Tracey Emin (born 1963) is a British artist known for her deeply personal and emotionally charged work exploring themes of love, sexuality, memory, loss, and vulnerability. Born in London and raised in Margate, England, Emin emerged in the 1990s as one of the most prominent figures of the Young British Artists (YBAs).
Working across drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, film, embroidery, and neon text, Emin transforms autobiographical experiences into powerful artistic statements. Her works often blur the boundaries between confession and performance, combining raw intimacy with direct language and expressive mark-making. Iconic pieces such as My Bed challenged traditional ideas of art by presenting everyday reality with uncompromising honesty and emotional intensity.
Throughout her career, Emin has exhibited internationally and become one of the most influential contemporary British artists. Her practice continues to resonate through its exploration of identity, trauma, desire, and the complexities of human relationships.
