Overview
“Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot physically see with his eyes.” — Sean Scully
Sean Scully (born 1945) is an Irish-born American painter and one of the leading figures of contemporary abstraction. Born in Dublin and raised in London, Scully studied at Croydon College of Art and Newcastle University before moving to the United States in the 1970s, where he developed his distinctive visual language based on stripes, grids, and layered blocks of color.
Scully’s work is characterized by richly textured surfaces, rhythmic compositions, and emotional depth. Combining the formal rigor of Minimalism with a deeply human and expressive sensibility, his paintings explore themes of memory, architecture, spirituality, and human connection. Through subtle shifts in color, proportion, and brushwork, Scully transforms geometric abstraction into a powerful and contemplative experience.
Over the course of his career, Scully has exhibited extensively worldwide and created works across painting, sculpture, photography, and printmaking. His art is held in major museum collections internationally and continues to play a significant role in the evolution of abstract painting.
